the cactus from mars

i first noticed the growth around the beginning of the year. you can just barely see it near the center in this picture:

january 3, 2006

i was pretty sure plants don't get cancer, so i was excited at the possibility of a flower or two.

since then, all it had done was grow a bunch more of these growths appeared, and i grew disappointed with the lack of... well, anything. lately they seemed to have deflated a little, and i was sure they were going to fall off any day now.

having seen little shop of horrors perhaps a few too many times, i can tell you that i am terrified to touch them. they do not yet look of this world, though i'm sure they will look quite beautiful in the morning.

incidentally, this was one of the first pictures with my new camera. there is a good chance i'm not using it correctly.

the turning of the tide

now that joe moved and doesn't yet have cable at his new place, i'm especially glad that i got tired of taking taxis home at 1:30 am and got oln.

also, i'm really glad i read the comments, although honestly that cover didn't look right.

this is going to be a long couple of weeks until the radiohead shows, and a fast couple of days once they're upon me. i hope the jsb album doesn't come out the same day as thom yorke's solo album; they'll probably get wrecked on the charts.

during the last few minutes of the cavs game today when it was pretty clear they weren't going to win, abc showed all of the times cleveland sports teams did not win championships:

the trivia on that last one is gold:

The fall-out of Indians' closer Jose Mesa failing to save Game 7 ultimately ignited a heated fued between Mesa and his teammate Omar Vizquel. In Vizquel's autobiography, the Indians' shortstop publicly blamed Mesa for being a "choker" and blowing the 1997 World Series for the Cleveland Indians. Soon afterwards, Mesa and Vizquel ended their longtime friendship. Mesa has since vowed to "...hit him every time he faced him" and also stated that he wanted to kill Vizquel. On April 22, 2006, when pitching to Vizquel, now a member of the San Francisco Giants, Mesa, now a member of the Colorado Rockies, made good on his promise and plunked Vizquel in the back.

really, it was hargrove's fault. mesa had been struggling for weeks by that point, if i remember correctly, and he really shouldn't have put him in. now, some may ask how many major league games i've won as manager (interesting trivia itself; the answer is 0), but at least i wasn't the first coach to blow a game 7 in the 9th inning.

not that i'm bitter.

also i'd never heard of the back to the future urban legend before.

also: LET'S GO OILERS!
