kernel[0]: disk2: I/O error.
boy, all i can say is i'm glad i tried both disks before i reformatted the only working drive in the raid set that has, well, all my email on it.
after seeing the movie friday night (it was so good we are going to go see it again tonight), i went looking for my books. i have not found them yet, but i did find copies of office 2000 for windows from my old vaois. i finally got it installed, after typing in my cd key incorrectly about 5 times. sunday morning afternoon i sat down to play a nice, relaxed, four-hour session of sim city. hey, but now that office is installed, it won't start! awesome.
oh right, i also updated lustre over the weekend. deleting some files sim city was stat64()ing got sim city working again, 24 hours later.
mafia last night went pretty well. i didn't get killed in the first game. i can't remember the last time that happened. i killed myself in the second game, and kristy almost pulled off the solo victory. if it wasn't for old man de icaza's darn meddling.
also i hate it when you don't get paid so you don't pay rent, then you do get paid so you pay rent, but you didn't have to because this is the last month in your lease and you already paid rent for it when you signed the lease, so you could have gotten a new powerbook instead.

i found $1200 on my steps five minutes ago
well not really. rent is only going up a third of what i thought it was. the best news i've heard in... hmm it's been a while, hasn't it?
it's almost too bad that i didn't delete all my mail yesterday, cause then i could just stop using email entirely. some sort of fight club internet zen.

my passport is my voice
we made it to ottawa no sweat. it turns out there is such a thing as too much honesty with customs. when asked what i was doing in canada, i replied that i was trying to find a wife. the look on phil's face at this point was well worth the extra 2 hour wait.
i didn't write down the set list because it was being recorded, but here it is from memory, i think it's out of order and missing something:
- First Set
- Daisy
- Running High
- When Worlds Collide
- Bumps In the Road
- Turn Around
- The 80's Runway Model
- Weight of the World
- Road Rage
- Now They Will Know We Were Here
- Encore
- Warm & Fuzzy Feeling
- Two Hands On the Wheel
the new drummer gets two thumbs up.

how i lost my millions
it was like walking into some sort of invrse parallel universe, where every radiohead single i thumbed through i didn't already own. india rubber, lull, they're all here, and in their original packaging!
this morning we discovered evidence of a grand conspiracy by the ribbon industry to inhibit finding cures to aids and cancer. details later.
i need a nap.

- Bumps In the Road
- Road Rage
- Corners
- The 80's Runway Model
- Turn Around

a day in the life aquatic
TLA "finally" came out on dvd. from the commentary, i feel what i got out of it was more or less spot on with what they intended, which was nice to see. and i can finally read the letter jane wrote to ned near the end:
Dear Ned, I just wanted to say again how much I loved the sand dollar necklace. The peppermint dental floss was an inspired touch. Who are you, Ned Plimpton? I find myself asking that question. I hope you allow me to find out. Love, Jane
very sweet.

it's all happening
mark your calendars, JSB is playing in Boston on the 25th, at bill's bar on lansdowne st. they will go on at 9 pm. i think there is a $5 cover, which i will reimburse if you do not enjoy the show. that's a pretty easy thing for me to say, because they are so awesome you will want to pay me $5 for telling you about it.
you should also bring your friends. it might be your only chance to see phil out on a weeknight this year!

throwing in the towel
i've taken to a new policy initiative, whereby (joe: you were right) i am not going to let things that i can't control get me down. well, at least with computers.
first, i'm going to give up on trying to get the backlight on my laptop fixed. i'm never going to get apple to reproduce it, it's easy enough to resolve when it happens, and i'm going to get a new one in a couple weeks anyway. done and done.
the second thing is bluetooth on windows. i've had like 0 trouble with my apple bluetooth keyboard on my mac, but no end to the suffering on windows. there's no battery monitor for it. i'll be playing the city game, and all of the sudden my keyboard stops working. and clicking on the shut down thing in the start menu? it always makes my keyboard stop working, and it doesn't work when i reboot, so i have to go find a usb keyboard to log in. no thanks.
and now that "bonjour" is out for windows, i think i can ditch having static DHCP + DNS + LDAP. oh, except for lustre. and getting to my imap server from outside. and if i ever want to play games over the internet. ok, focus.
also, i want a ps3.

a night in my life
I've been putting this mail off for a week now, in the hope that I would be inspired to write something clever and yet simultaneously intriguing enough to get the lot of you to come see some band. I have not been inspired. And yet, as in all things, if I were to put it off much longer, the problem would take care of itself, for we are on a tight schedule here. So I will get with the details: YOUR PRESENCE IS REQUESTED FOR A NIGHT IN MY LIFE T H E J I M M Y S W I F T B A N D LIVE IN AMERICA FOR THE SECOND TIME THEIR FIRST SHOW IN OUR GREAT COMMONWEALTH WEDNESDAY MAY 25TH - THEY GO ON AT 9 PM BILL'S BAR ON LANSDOWNE (I THINK NEAR JILLIAN'S) I HEAR THERE IS A $5 COVER I used to describe them as perhaps Pink Floyd playing something not unlike disco house music, but they got a new drummer and rewrote all their songs so now I'm not sure what to say. Except that they are so awesome that Phil is coming out on a WEEKDAY NIGHT to rock out in True Medford Style. I hope to see you there. - jacob

slack this
first shaver, then phil. who's next, nat? he used to write stuff like this:
I'm also just a little worried about the potential for biochemical fallout resulting from my plunge into the murky, polluted depths of the Charles river. If my skin turns scaley or starts sloughing off it could have disasterous effects on my already paltry social life.
since i'm down to 6G free on my iPod, i was looking at how bulky the 60G photo is compared to my 40G. it turns out: .02 inches thicker, and .2 ounces heaver, with almost twice the battery. not bad, i thought, not bad. then i find out joe got one!

one hand in space
last night phil and i went to the atlantic fish co. on boylston, in a desperate attempt to find a seafood place in boston that can rival any of the fine establishments i've enjoyed in canada. from the bread to the fish to the cornbread pudding and dessert, i have to say that it was better than any meal at legal's in recent memory. the only disappointment was that the vegetables were probably cooked a little more than we prefer. i need to find out when their asparagus season begins.
here is a web page about salmon, the egg of the sea.
it's 9 am, and i sure am ready for a nap.
